Over the last few weeks our 6th and 7th graders had special presentations from our Monmouth County AmeriCorps watershed ambassador, Richard Robinson. Our 6th graders learned about microplastics and how this plastic pollution not only affects the cleanliness of our beaches and water quality, but can also affect our food supply as well. Students had the opportunity to sort through sand samples, searching for nurdles (tiny plastic pellets) and learned how to differentiate them between rocks and pebbles. In 7th grade, students learned that macroinvertebrates are bioindicators and can provide insight on the water quality of our freshwater streams. Students learned how to identify species using preserved specimens and then determined if the water source would be healthy or polluted.
