We will be starting our persuasive writing and debate unit in class this week! This is a wonderful opportunity for students to develop their writing, speaking, and critical thinking skills in an engaging and interactive way.
How the Debate Will Work:
Topic Selection: Each student will choose a debate topic from a list of options. The topics range from school policies to current events, allowing students to explore different perspectives and strengthen their argumentation skills.
Research and Writing: Students will first conduct research to gather facts and evidence that support their position. They will then write a persuasive speech that presents their argument clearly and persuasively. The goal is to build a compelling case that will convince the audience of their perspective. This will be completed in class.
Debate Preparation: Once the speeches are written, students will practice delivering their speeches at home. Each student will also prepare to respond to questions or counterarguments, helping them improve their public speaking and critical thinking.
Debate Day: On the day of the debate, students will present their arguments and engage in a respectful exchange of ideas with their peers.
We encourage all students to engage with the topics thoughtfully and be respectful of others’ opinions. This unit will not only help students become stronger writers and speakers, but it will also provide a platform for them to express their ideas confidently.
I am excited to see how the students engage with the material and grow throughout this process.
Strengthen reading comprehension and analysis
