For the next two weeks, I will teach the concept of a closed syllable. A closed syllable ends in a consonant and only has one vowel. The vowel in a closed syllable is short, as in the word “math” or “cat.” The recognition of this word structure will be key as we continue with the program.
To mark a closed syllable, your child has learned to scoop or underline the word, put a c under the scoop to indicate “closed,” and a breve ( ˘ ) over the vowel to indicate it is short. Please refer to the closed syllable cheat sheet I sent home for help with marking and examples.
Even though all the words have been closed syllables, every once in a while ask, “Is this word a closed syllable?” and, “Why?”
I will also teach these vowel teams using the Vowel Teams poster: ai, ay, ee, ea, ey, oi, and oy. Vowel teams are introduced for reference when students are reading throughout the day. These sounds will be learned in more depth for both reading and spelling in Level 2. In the meantime, we will practice the sounds during our Drill Sounds/Warm Up activity in class.
I strongly encourage all students to work on the Unit 9 packet that was sent home at the beginning of the unit to reinforce what we are learning in class and to review before test. Flashcards for the trick words we are learning in each unit are also in the unit packets, so please cut them out are review them every night. We are also practicing tapping out words, identifying vowel sounds, and improving handwriting with correct letter formation. You can help at home by having your child:
Read and mark words with digraphs, bonus letters, suffixes, blends, and glued sounds in their weekly books.
Circle trick words
Practice spelling simple CVC (consonant-vowel-consonant) words and words with digraphs (like ship, bath, chop, duck, etc.), bonus letters (like puff, buss, off, fill, chill, Bess, etc.), glued sounds (sing, bank, ball, ham, fan, etc.), and blends (like plug, munch, lunch, shrug, drop, etc.)
Say the sound each letter, digraph, glued sound, or blend makes.
Homework should be completed and returned each day.
Students should also read the decodable book that was sent home in the beginning of the week every night.Monday- Fundations Sheet & Math Sheet
